On Tuesday night, City Council flew by, lasting a mere 40 minutes. The only issue that raised a bit of contention was the last item on the agenda - changing the start time of council meetings.
Mayor Heather Jackson proposed a start time of 5 p.m. for in-camera, and 6:00 p.m. for open council. She said this was so that during meetings that go late, they get that extra hour. This could mean the difference between ending at 11 p.m. and closing the meeting at 10 p.m. Jackson added that, after a full day of work, this could be very valuable.
The motion was opposed by Alderman Campbell and Baldwin-Sands, on the grounds that people running for council in 2014 may not be able to take work off at 5 p.m., and also that they had already done 3 years of it this way, so why not finish of the 4 year term the way we started.
In a recorded vote, the motion passed 6-2.
