It's time to RETHINK our waste.

Preserve the planet for us and for our kids.

It's starting to sound almost like a cliche.  For some it's catching on but we need to do much more and we can't become complacent.

Here are some facts to consider:

  • 60% of waste that Barrie residents put in the garbage should be disposed of in other ways.
  • 70% of Barrie residents do not use the green bin for organic waste.
  • 38% of material collected as waste in 2013 from Barrie residents could have been composted or put in the green bin for organic waste.
  • The current estimated close date of the Barrie landfil site is just 21 short years away in 2035!

To take advantage of the recycling programs Barrie has available costs little or nothing and takes no more time.  Here are some new ways Barrie is working hard to reduce, re-use and recycle.

  • Starting in April of 2014, plastic grocery and retail bags will be able to be included in your recycling bin.
  • Starting April 7, 2014 empty aerosol cans can be included in your recycling bin.
  • Starting April 7, 2014 empty metal paint cans can be recycled in your curbside blue bins.
  • There are over 3000 locations in Ontario where you can safely deposit your old dead batteries.
  • FREE GOODS exchange day on the 2nd Saturday of June.  A great way to get rid of things you don't need or want but are still usable.
  • Use old newspapers and flyers to line your green bin for a free organic liner.

Starting in January of 2015 there will be garbage pickup for Barrie residents will change to 2 bags of garbage picked up every 2 weeks.

It's up to us!
