OK I admit it...I am a tree hugger. I try to be environmentally friendly and I am trying to teach my kids to be also. So when new neighbours moved in next door and ripped out almost every shrub, flower and plant the previous owners had worked hard to nurture and grow, I was saddened by the waste. The retail value of the plants that were dug up and taken to the local landfill site was probably in the $1500 to $2000 range. I don't begrudge the new owners their taste in landscaping. The gardens were high maintenance and for most families it would have just been too much to take care of. But to take these healthy, lush plants and perennials and just toss them out made my heart sick! Not only that, but the old owners would probably have taken them with them to their new home. So Please....before you dig up and toss healthy plants, see if the old owners or any of your neighbours, friends or family would like them. Maybe you will even save yourself a great deal of work! Certainly, if I had known that these plants were going to be disposed of, I would have headed over there with a shovel and done most of the work for them in return for keeping the plants.
