The little town that could, has done it again!  Last summer, based on the premise of “what have we got to lose?”, the Pinawa Arena Board, entered a Kraft/TSN online voting contest. The competition saw them pitted against the town of Steinbach, MB, which has a much larger population. However, with tremendous support from friends and family of Pinawa folks in all parts of the world, they won $25,000 for arena upgrades.

Now, operating on that same premise, the Pinawa Minor Hockey Association decided to enter another contest. This time it was called the Western Hockey League/Delissio Hockey Challenge. The contest required collecting as many UPC codes from Delissio pizza boxes and mailing them in. It was simply a matter of collecting more codes than anyone else. In other words, eat more pizza than anyone else. The PMHA set out collection boxes in the schools, at the recycling depot and at the Solo grocery store. Solo really got into the act by offering to clip the codes from the boxes right at the checkout counter and the kept the Delissio products at sale prices for the entire month of January. Volunteers filled out a few hundred entry forms, and, thanks to pizza-loving Pinawa folks, over 1,000 UPC codes were delivered to the contest headquarters by the deadline of February 28. All that was left to do was wait. Did we eat enough pizza?

PMHA President, Ron Drabyk, said they checked the contest website every day to see if they had won, but nothing was posted. Then, on Tuesday, March 15, he received the phone call we had all been hoping for. We did it! We had eaten enough! Pinawa Minor Hockey had won the grand prize of $50,000!! The Brandon Wheat Kings will be part of the community celebration hosted by Pinawa Minor Hockey at the Orville Acres Arena where the much appreciated cheque will be presented. Congratulations PMHA and Thank You Delissio!!
