February Fun in My "Neighbourhood" North East Manitoba

SKIING...The Whiteshell Ski Club www.whiteshellskiclub.com will host a triple event this month that's expected to draw hundreds of participants from around western Canada.  The ski club, in partnership with the Red River Nordic club, will host the Haywood Canada Cup, Western Canadian Championships, and provincial championships Feb 12-14 in Pinawa.

The three race series is for all ages and capabilities, event chair Peter Vilks said.

The first day of the three-day event will feature free technique sprints, with race distances of 150 to 1,000 m, depending upon age. Individual time trials as a qualifier followed by heats of up to six skiers to determine final standing will follow.

Saturday will include classic races on the 5.8 km new Pinawa golf course trail, with total race distance of up to 17.4 km.  Sunday features freestyle races to be held on the same 5.8km golf course trail.

CURLING... The hugely popular, annual Men's Curling Bonspiel happens Thursday, Feb. 18 to Sunday Feb. 21 at the Lac du Bonnet Curling Rink.

MUSIC...Eastern Manitoba Concert Association (EMCA) hosts another exciting musical event.  Jazz will permeate the walls and halls of Pinawa's community centre on Friday, February 19 for EMCA's fifth concert in its 2009-10 series. The University of Manitoba Faculty Jazz Ensemble led by Steve Kirby, Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Manitoba will be on stage to thrill the followers of "cool" music and to convert those who have not been exposed to the sounds born in the south.  www.emcaconcerts.com
