Give Your Neighbourhood a Facelift

The snow is gone and the flowers are blooming. Your neighbourhood is starting to flourish as the buds burst and the green grass grows, but there’s something getting in the way of its natural beauty.
The winter’s litter has been uncovered after many months of snow. Garbage is strewn about in ditches, rivers and parks. Sadly, it happens to every neighbourhood. But there’s no reason it needs to stay there all spring and summer long.

Some communities have  clean-up committees but you can do your own bit whenever you find the time.
Take a garbage bag with you on nightly walks or when you take the dog out to the park, or make an event out of it and organize some friends and neighbours for a weekend clean up and barbecue. Cleaning up litter doesn’t have to be a drag. The more excuses to get together with friends and feel good about how you’ve spent your time, the better.

Make sure you have a supply of garbage bags and recycling bags, as well as gloves to protect your hands. You can also purchase a grab stick to decrease bending and to avoid touching the litter as you’re guaranteed to find food waste and sharp objects amongst the garbage.
Sort between the garbage and recycling while you’re cleaning or when you return home. It’s also a good idea to plan your clean-up around garbage and recycling pick-up times so you don’t have to find a place to store the full bags until the appropriate day comes around. Make it habit:
Your green actions don’t have to be a one-time event either. You can make it a regular do-good opportunity by choosing a day of the week or month and writing it into your calendar. The nice weather is here! You’re going to be out walking anyway, so why not make the most of it?
