We have it pretty good here

Over the past month my postion as President of the New Brunswick Real Estate Association has taken me to the west coast twice - first to Vancouver and then to San Francisco. We love to travel so my wife went with me to SF and we added a bit of vacation time on the end to visit Seattle and then take the ferry to Victoria to visit our middle child who is doing graduate work at UVic.

When I'm travelling I always like to check out local real estate prices versus what we have to pay at home. Here is some of the things I came across:

   * a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1200 sf condo overlooking the harbour in Vancouver will set you back $2,400,000 - condo fee $800 per month;

   * a 234 sf "micro-loft" near the harbour in Victoria is $109,900.

   * my cab driver in Vancouver owns a building lot in Richmond and turned down an offer of $1.6M from a contractor because he is certain he can get $2M for it.

   * a 2 BR apartment in San Francisco costs $4500 per month - same thing in Seattle of Vancouver is around $2500

So, our prices seem pretty good. However we don't have the Rockies, and SF has 3200 restaurants, so we are missing a few things too! Still, it always feels good to get back home.
