Family Fight Against Cancer

In May 2011, my father had a CAT scan completed that was irregular. Another was completed in July 2011 which showed tumor(s). On August 19, 2011, my father (65 yo) was unfortunately diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. On September 21, 2011, the surgeon, Dr. Hogan, attempted to complete a risky Appleby Procedure to remove the mass. Unfortunately, additional tumors were discovered and surgery was stopped. Yesterday, October 4, 2011, my father started his first cycle of chemotherapy to decrease the size of the exisiting tumors and to stop the development of additional tumors.

Our family, friends, and colleagues have been extremely supportive during this difficult time. I'd like to thank everyone that has written, called and/or prayed for my father/family.  A special thank you goes out to Stefanie of Craig's Cause for all of her support and Dr. Michele Molinari for the emails and phone conversation! You are both amazing people that have helped my family immensely!

In recent years there have been significant advances in cancer research and treatment.  An article by Jennifer Goodwin states, "Some of the biggest successes: Breast cancer deaths fell about 28 percent from 1990 to 2006, while deaths from cervical cancer have dropped nearly 31 percent. Colorectal deaths have fallen 28 percent in women and 33 percent in men; deaths from leukemia have fallen nearly 15 percent in women and 10 percent in men; and deaths from stomach cancer have fallen 34 percent in women and 43 percent in men. Many more men are also surviving prostate cancer, with death rates falling 39 percent."

There are additional treatments available but they aren't for everyone...depends on age, fitness level, previous conditions, etc. For example there is a Pancreatic Cancer Vaccine Underway - UK Scientists are presently testing a vaccine called TeloVac that could be available to patients in 2013.

My positive thoughts go out to all those fighting cancer right now...keep it positive, live each day to the fullest, hug your loved ones, enjoy life. Hugs :)
