Moving....Where do I Start?!

Preparing to move once you have your house sold can be an overwhelming task.
Here's a simple checklist of items not to forget to do!

- Notify post office - get mail redirected to new address.
- Notify credit card companies, life insurance, RRSP, and other companies of your new address.
- Let your family and friends know your new address and telephone number.
- Notify utility companies of when to disconnect services: gas, phone, water, electricity, internet.
- Make arrangements for last oil fill up and/or propane.
- Make arrangements for the services at your new location will in advance of moving day.
- Carry with you all money, important documents, jewelry, valuables and medicaitons.
- Notify the Motor Vehicle Registry and Provincial medical plan of you change of address.
- Notify your doctor, dentist, government, and other specilaist of your new address
- Visit your school to get your children's records tranferred to the new school.
- Clean the house of non-essentials for appearance sake and to reduce moving bill.
- Try and pick a closing date that isn't at the peak moving time (last 5 days of the month).
- Transfer all bank accounts to the new address.
- Bring an old phone book.
- Schedule your moving company.
- Keep a "last on, first off" carton for toilet paper, light bulbs, cleaners, coffee maker, some dishes, some basic tools, blankets/pillows, change of clothes, and remote control units for all the applainces.
- Discard of flammables before moving.
- Ensure liquids are securely sealed and placed in plastic bags.
- Make plans to clear out the majority of the items in the fridge and freezer.
- Defrost and clean fridge and freezer; clean the stove.
- On moving day, check all spaces to ensure nothing is left behind (cupboards, attic, crawl spaces, etc).
- Load your car with items you will be moving and not the movers.
- Identify contents of boxes; label and color code for rooms.
- Dismantle or have serviced and major items such as swing sets, gym sets, shop equipment, shelving, appliances, etc.
