Ice Fishing on Lake Scugog
The Kawartha Lakes offers up a bounty of winter opportunities to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Many winter activities one can enjoy include a brisk walk on a bright crisp day, carving a path while skiing in the fresh falling powder, strolling the many trails by snowmobile or dropping a fishing line in a drilled hole in the ice.
Recently I was out at the Sandbar Park, Beach Road, Valentia and noticed the ice huts are out. Ice fishing on Lake Scugog is a very popular winter sport, with a season that runs from January 1 to the last day of February 2013. The species in winter season are walleye, perch, crappie and sunfish. There are several boat launching locations in the area that offer access to the lake such as the Sandbar Park, View Lake, Washburn Island and Newman Beach to name a few.
Before venturing out for a day on the ice, it is best to check with the local authories to determine the integrity and safety of the ice cover.
There is still plenty of time in the season to have fun and enjoy yourself...But as always be sure to exercise care with safety practices as a guide at all times.
