Thinking of renovating? Your home is your canvas

Thinking of renovating? Your house is your canvas....

When people are asked why they want to renovate their home, the most common answer is to increase the value (Forbes.com). Before embarking on this journey, consult your local Century 21 PowerRealty.ca real estate associate to help assess whether your investment into the reno will yield the increase in value that you hope for.

Whether you live in Calgary, Strathmore, Airdrie or Drumheller, it is important that the renovation you undertake is not so overwhelmingly personal that prospective buyers do not see the value of the renovation (Forbes.com). You may have always wanted to live in Mexico, but a cabana-style wet bar in your basement may not increase the value of your home to others as much as it does to you.

Keep in tune with your local character. If you live on a street in Airdrie lined with turn of the century homes that are maintained as such, hyper-modernizing your home may not increase the value as much as you would like (Forbes.com). Be aware of your area and surroundings. If you are not sure about your local market and where your home ranks, ask! We are happy to offer our experienced opinion.

Not everything has to be renovated simultaneously. It’s okay to renovate with small projects here and there. Make a budget and stick to it. If your budget only allows for certain renovations, our team can help direct you to the most beneficial renovations to increase the value of your property. The kitchen, bathroom and mudroom are all great places to start. Let us help you narrow the scope and focus on targeted value improvements!

While DIY is quite popular, there are some jobs that should be left to the professionals. If you are not a trained electrician, do not undertake major electrical projects. Keep it safe and leave it to the experts. For general DIY assistance, tips and tricks have a look at the websites of some of the major hardware stores (Home Depot, Rona, Lowes etc).

As a general rule - if you don’t know, ask! We are happy to have a conversation with you about your home renovation project and how to best add value in your geographic area. Call your local PowerRealty.ca agent at 403.324.2222 or email power.realty@century21.ca.
