Everyone in the family is getting excited to go on that long awaited family Christmas vacation! With all the excitement brewing, there may be some things you need to do to protect your home before you leave.
The first thing you need to do is have someone keep an eye on your home. If you have a good relationship with your neighbors, let them know you will be away and ask them to keep an eye out. If your neighbors are going to be away as well, perhaps find a house sitting service or have a family member check the home. Most insurance providers require some sort of property surveillance as frequently as every 72 hours. Check with your insurance provider for the requirements of your policy.
Next, it’s a good idea to make sure that you shut off your main water valve and open a few faucets around the house to drain the water. This will ensure that if there is a power outage or your source of heating is disrupted the pipes will not freeze and rupture.
The last thing you should remember to do is arrange for someone to shovel your walk if there is a snow fall. If you are gone for an extended time and your sidewalk, walkway or driveway are not cleared and someone falls you may be held liable.
These three simple steps can make all the difference between enjoying your amazing Christmas holiday and coming home to resolve a series of problems that are waiting for you. I want to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year – enjoy your time away.
