Home Builders kept busy as winter approaches

Regina home builders started construction on 305 housing units in October, down from 376 in October 2013. This is largely due to a decline in single-detached housing starts.

Last month, 68 single family dwellings were started, down 39% from 111 in October last year, while multiple unit starts were down about 11% to 237 from 265 during the same period last year.

Total housing starts were 19% lower in October than a year ago due to reductions in both single detached and multi-family construction.

Several permits were issued in October for commercial construction including:

  • An apartment building at 1050 Dorothy Street
  • An apartment building at 1291 N McEachern Drive
  • A new laundry plant at 730 Dethridge Bay in Ross Industrial Park
  • Alterations to the City of Regina's waste water treatment plant at 100 Fleming Road

The value of the residential projects - including single family dwellings, duplexes and semi-detached dwellings, multi-attached dwellings and apartments - totaled $262.2 million for the first ten months, compared with $346.1 million for the same period last year.
