Enjoy What We Have--Part 2

In September '09 I wrote a short piece about my experience in a Denny's restaurant and meeting a server who was making $2.13 per hour. I commented at the time that we should count our blessings about the life style and quality of living we enjoy in Canada.  Well, I visited the fine town of Myrtle Beach again this year for 2 weeks of golfing and sun.  I, again, visited the same Denny's as the previous year, and lo and behold, we got the same server again. She was still the same efficient and personable lady we met the previous year.  I had an occassion to visit the restroom to wash my hands ( to get the grime of the 10 sand traps I visited that day) and there was an official government notice tacked to the wall that said that minimum wage was increasing to $4.50 per hour.  A quick calculation told me that this lady was now up to $9,000.00 per year...if she worked 50 weeks per year and 8 hours per day.  When I got back to the table, I struck up a converstaion with her and learned that she was still living in a motel on a week to week basis.  She didn't qualify for subsidzed housing ( which doesn't exist) and the increases in wage really won't change anything. I tipped the good lady $7.00 on a $18.00 dollar bill with the silent hope that every diner would do the same thing.  That may get her in the position of moving out of that motel eventually.  I'll find our next year...because I'm sure she will be still there.
