Condos Have Recycling Options

Residents in high-rise condo buildings and many other types of multi-family homes are not part of the City of Calgary’s recycling program and until now have been pretty much left to their own devices when it came to recycling.

Now, to make up its shortfall, the city has announced the Know Your Recycling Options campaign, aimed at ensuring Calgarians who live in apartments, condos and other multi-family residences know there are options available for recycling.

"The city continues to operate 48 community recycling depots throughout Calgary," says waste division specialist Philippa Wagner.

"In addition, multi-family residential complexes can also find local private service providers at www.recyclinghotline.ca, a listing service maintained by the Recycling Council of Alberta."

Wagner says the city is also looking towards the future.

"We are currently engaging stakeholders in the recycling and multi-family residential sectors in order to develop strategy options for residents who live in condo and apartment-style housing," she says.

These options will form the basis for a report to be presented to council and Wagner says an online survey is part of the engagement process.

The survey, which is being administered by Stantec Consulting, is open to all Calgarians until Nov. 2. More information and access to the survey can be found at Calgary.ca/ multifamilyrecycling
