Who elected you anyway?

I was just driving back from vacation when it dawned on me that our Canadian politicians have been able to accomplish what several environmental and economic catastrophies have failed to do. It was a stunning realization that made me very happy I was not driving on a bridge. Our premier has pushed forward with his agenda to harmonize the sales taxes and our federal leader has initiated more stringent requirements on obtaining a mortgage.

I may not have the answers to our obviously intricate economy and difficult political climate but I certainly have questions. If the housing market is indeed a strong indicator of the state of the economy then why would any reasonable thinker attack a stable and effective market. Hm mm,.... could it be that the governments need a tax grab to pay for corporate bailouts and foreign country defaulted debt? Could it be that politicians are more interested in pleasing large corporations and special interest groups than considering the needs of the public who finance the bottomless pit of spending they thrive on. Are those that lobby our political system and the glad-handing fundraisers for the major political parties more significant than the man on the street?

It seems to me that many of the decisions being made these days should come under more scrutiny by the general public and politicians alike. If we had the right to fire our elected representative mid term for bad decisions I think we would have a more responsive government body. If we had the right to remove the "Golden Parachute" from politicians and bureaucrats I am certain that the values of the majority would be followed more closely. I doubt that we have any real voice in policy making and I know that my rant will have little impact if any on the direction of political realities but every once in a while I just need to step up and let my voice out, even if just for a brief moment.
