Regina housing starts have not cooled like the weather
The Prairie provinces have seen by far the strongest increase in housing activity in Canada this year, with Alberta starts up 33%, Saskatchewan 40% and Manitoba 26%.
Total housing starts in the Regina area more than doubled with 240 starts in November compared to 116 in November 2011. According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp (CMHC) this is mainly due to the number of multi-family units under construction.
Regina home builders started 97 single-detached units in November 2011 and November 2012. Multi-family units, which consist of semi-detached units, rows, and apartments, totalled 143 units in November compared to only 19 units in the same month a year ago.
Residential starts in the first 11 months of 2012 compared to the first 11 months of 2011:
- Total starts: 2,733 units in 2012 - 1,530 in 2011, an increase of 79%
- Single detached units: 1,231 units in 2012 - 879 in 2011, an increase of 40%
- Multi-family units: 1,502 units in 2012, more than double the 651 starts in 2011
