Big jump in housing starts in Durham

DURHAM -- New home construction jumped significantly last month over January 2011.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, 160 new homes were started in January, an increase of 181 per cent. In January of 2011, there were 57 housing starts.

Most of the construction was in Clarington, with 62 units started, followed by Ajax with 53, Whitby with 24, Oshawa with 16 and five in Pickering. No homes were started in Uxbridge, Scugog or Brock townships.

Of the starts, 112 were single-detached houses, 40 were townhouses and eight semi-detached.

"New home construction in Oshawa (Census Metropolitan Area) has remained within a tight range over the past few years and in line with underlying demand and supply conditions in the area. No major changes are foreseen for construction levels in the near future," says Inna Breidburg, market analyst with CMHC's Ontario Business Centre.
