Renovating a Century Home

My wife Margie and I purchased an 1885 semi-detached home recently and carried out some extensive renovations. The property had been sadly neglected and abused and was in very poor condition. We did some significant foundation work, a concrete strip footing with re-bar to support the rear portion and 4' square x 16" deep pad footings with re-bar to support steel posts which in turn supported an 8" steel I-Beam. We jacked up the middle of the house which had sunk about 2" and placed the steel I-Beam under the floor joists. We also corrected some significant electrical issues with the help of an excellent local electrician. New light fixtures, refinished wood floors, new high efficiency gas furnace, a new kitchen and fresh paint throughout and the transformation was amazing. It was a lot of work but well worth it. I feel I have an even better background now to advise clients who are looking at properties with issues.
