Burlington - the Number 1 Place to Live in Canada! - By Sean Kavanagh

Since MoneySense magazine has confirmed what many of us already know, Burlington is the best place to live, I had to dedicate one of my days to the entire city of Burlington. When we were house hunting trying to get out of Toronto, we gave Burlington a try. We first came during the ‘Sound of Music’ festival weekend, took walks in Spencer Smith Park and enjoyed what the downtown had to offer. The next week we bought our first Burlington home. Even better, without planning it that way, the transaction closed during the ‘Ribfest’ weekend. I knew I was on to something special by moving to this great city!

The magazine has named Burlington the No. 1 mid-sized city (population between 100,000 and 400,000) in Canada.

“I’m thrilled with the rating,” Mayor Rick Goldring told the Post. “The fact we’re ranked the best city to live in, in Ontario and the best mid-sized city in Canada certainly is very helpful in helping us be noticed in our quest to attract more business to Burlington.”

The ranking was based on 33 categories, such as income, employment, housing costs, healthcare, culture, weather, crime rates and amenities. The magazine reported the average household income in Burlington was $110,031, with the average home valued at $417,102. The unemployment rate was reported at 4.65 per cent.

The other top nine cities in the mid-size category, in order, are: Oakville, Saanich, B.C.; Lethbridge, Alta.; Saskatoon, Sask.; Regina, Sask.; Kingston, Vaughan, Richmond Hill and Levis, Que.

“There’s something special that doesn’t show up in the MoneySense rankings,” said the Mayor. “It’s something that you can’t measure, but when you talk to people who move to Burlington from outside of Burlington, they are always quick to tell me how there’s something special about the city. It goes back to this connected, compassionate community.”

I could not agree more. We were in Toronto thinking ‘how could we ever leave this great city?’, until we found Burlington. Now our family could not imagine living anywhere else. Congratulations to the people of Burlington who are the reason this is the best place to live in Canada.
