Whether you’re looking to buy or sell a home in Toronto, one of the most important first decisions you make involves finding a great realtor. Here are five tips to help hire the right realtor for your needs:
- Ask Them To Tell You About Themselves
It’s an open-ended question that helps you obtain information about how long the agent has been practicing, their area of expertise, their professionalism and knowledge about real estate, client service and your needs.
- Area of Expertise
Does the real estate agent excel in helping clients buy or sell homes? Do they know the downtown Toronto condo market or the detached home market or lofts or townhomes? What type of homes did they help their clients buy or sell in the past year? How knowledgeable are they in their response?
- Client References
Ask for at least two or three references. This will give you important information when making a decision: what type of homes were they buying or selling? What area? How were the agent’s customer service, professionalism and knowledge?
- What’s the Plan?
This is a good tactic to assess whether your prospective agent has a game plan for helping you (open house, listing price, market timing, marketing & promotion, professional listing photos, social media, etc). You and your real estate agent should be on the same page when it comes to planning strategy.
- Money Talks
How does the realtor respond to your budget requirements or desired price for the home you’re selling? A good agent will understand your needs, offer their advice and then support you. Be wary of an agent who looks too eager to make a quick sale. A good agent will want to build a solid relationship with you, so that you call them when you want to buy or sell your next home and refer them to others confidently.
