Food trucks could return to Montreal's streets as early as next summer if the city council approves a plan to allow food trucks on city streets.
Montreal announced in June that it would reassess its ban on food trucks. City council held the first of four public consultations on Wednesday night.
"It's been done in New York and Toronto … all across the world. It's a new standard for tourism," said councillor Bernard Blanchet.
In 1947 food trucks were banned in Montreal because of hygiene concerns. Currently, Montreal food trucks can only sell their goods during certain public events and festivals.
The Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association is asking that no food trucks be allowed within 60 metres of an existing restaurant.
