It's Labor Day Weekend already! What the what?? Where has the Summer gone??? As sad as it is to admit that Summer time has passed us by and we are heading swiftly into the Fall, one thing we have to look forward to is the 56th Annual Steam Era. Starting at noon on Friday and running straight through until 4 pm on Monday, there is ample time to visit and enjoy the sites, and sounds, of this long standing Milton tradition.
As a kid growing up in Milton, a stone's throw from the Fair Grounds coincidentally, I remember many family visits to the Steam Era over the years. What I didn't know then, but learned while researching for this blog, is that it is in fact not just a "Milton thing" but the Steam Era is so much more than that!!
Back in 1960 the Ontario Steam and Antique Preserves Association was created, due in large part to some of our local men interested in preserving and sharing their knowledge of vehicles, machinery and power equipment of antiquity. What started as a small group of 4 men quickly grew to a large group of steam enthusiasts and the idea for the Steam Era was born. A few different locations were suggested as to where to hold the event but lucky for us Miltonians it was decided in the end that the Milton Fair Grounds was the best choice. For 54 years the Milton Fair Grounds played host to the weekend long event, and then in 2014 the show was moved to County Heritage Park, and ideal location for a show of this kind.
There is so much more to the Steam Era than simply being able to see, and hear, the tractors and steam engines...there are planned activities on each day. Everything from line dancing, to a juggling and fire act. There is also a Night On Fire Steam Engine Spark Show each night which I'm sure the kids will love. My favorite of course is the exotic animals show. It's a pretty safe bet that if an event or party has animals, I'm there!!
