Milton Laurier University Campus Updates

There are many rumours swirling around Milton about the proposed Wilfred Laurier University Campus.  Who knows what to believe anymore!

We've created a short video to dispel some of the most prevalent rumours floating about.

Fact: The Town of Milton and Wilfred Laurier University signed a memorandum of understanding in 2008 to explore the possibility of adding a 150 acre campus to the Milton Education Village.  This was renewed in 2011.

Rumour: Building the campus has already started and house values have skyrocketed through the roof.  What people have actually been seeing is the Velodrome being built for the Pan/Am games.  In the Laurier proposal, the Velodrome would be a venue for university sports and recreation.  But, without provincial funding and approval, construction can’t start.

Rumour: Universities can open a campus wherever and whenever they want.  What’s taking them so long, anyway?  Actually, the process is long and complex.  In March 2013, Laurier released its pre-budget proposal to the Ontario Legislature, seeking funding and approval of the Milton Campus.  But, on May 20 2015, the provincial government chose not to accept the proposal.  The province did, however, announce that it would be seeking proposals in Peel and Halton Regions in 2016.

Rumour: Laurier owns the land for the proposed campus.  Not exactly: In 2010, a 150 acre parcel was conveyed to the town of Milton for the future Laurier site.  The Milton Education Village as a whole takes up whopping 400 acres.

Fact: The proposed Laurier Campus is an exciting possibility for the town of Milton and the entire region.  However, during this process, it’s important to check facts and glean information only from reliable sources.
