11 Things You Need to Ban From Your Kitchen


Kitchens are the heart of the home, and just like with your blood-pumping organ, it's important to keep it clean and healthy. These sneaky things may be spreading germs, adding stress, or causing you to overeat. Ditch 'em today.

1. Dirty sponges

These scrubbers are breeding grounds for bacteria and germs and should be cleaned weekly, and tossed every two to eight weeks. We found that a five-minute soak in a bleach solution is the best way to kill bacteria, but kick 'em to the curb when the start looking shabby.

2. Your clear cookie jar

The sad truth is if you can actually see the goodies stashed in your container, you're more likely to eat them. Opt for an opaque jar instead to avoid binging on one too many of your favorite treat.

3. Reusable grocery bags

Okay, you don't have to dump them for good, but reusable totes can harbor bacteria — which can then transfer to your food — if you aren't taking care of them.  If you keep a stock pile, wipe them with a disinfecting wipe or throw them in the laundry after you're done unloading the supermarket haul.
