The True Superheros

People always ask “Why I do it”

It is almost time for the annual Easter Seals Alberta Drop Zone Event.  As I prepare myself to don a helmet, take a deep breath and throw myself over the side of the Sun Life Building in Calgary, there is always one question that is asked of me as I gather pledges and that is - why?

The first reason why I rappel 30 stories down the side of a building is to support kids with disabilities and special needs.  Some of the money raised goes toward sending these amazing children to a camp designed with them in mind.  The camp gives them the opportunity to experience camping just like other kids, to make lasting friendships and to make life long memories.

Secondly I participate to help people of all ages living with disabilities and special needs so that they can receive the equipment, technology and support that they need to live a more independent and fulfilling life.

The highlight of the event is the evening reception. There’s not a dry eye in the house after hearing firsthand the impact Easter Seals Alberta has on the lives of people in our community.  This year’s Southern Alberta ambassador Nicole Wuetherick had this to say about her experience with Easter Seals Alberta.  “Camp has given me a different outlook on my life and it has made me realize how strong of a person I really am.  It has provided me with opportunities to connect with other kids like me and has allowed me to attend a camp where I can experience things like other kids.  I have been going to Easter Seals Camp Horizon since I was 8 years old and I look forward to it every year!  It is always one of the highlights of my year”.  She goes on to say “I hope that kids continue to have the opportunity to go to camp and have the experiences that I have had”.

Our Team is very passionate about this event and this year it takes place on Thursday Sept 3, 2015 and there is still plenty of time to become involved.  We have been volunteers and supporters since day one of the drop zone in Calgary and  have personally experienced the thrill of rappelling numerous times.  To see the participants step out of their comfort zone and face their fears head on; all for a worthy cause is life changing.

They refer to the rapellers as “Superheroes for the day”, but the true superheroes are the adults and children living with disabilities that are enjoying life and not letting anything stand in their way- each and every day.

This is why I do it!
