Mild steel is the most common form of steel. It is flexible and not brittle. It is cheap. When a great deal of steel is needed it is often the type of steel selected. 

Mild steel is a carbon steel composed of carbon, manganese, silicon and some traces of other elements like phosphorous, it can also contain lead (free cutting mild steel) or sulphur (free cutting steel called re-sulphuised mild steel). 

The term mild steel is a general term for an array of low carbon steels that have good strength and are flexible so that they can be made into sheet metal fabrication or a variety of shapes for uses from vehicles (like cars and ships) to building materials. Here are some of the advantages of choosing mild steel for construction:

  •  Mild Steel Bars in Concrete

Cement concrete is strong in basic strength, but lacks tensile strength. In order to increase its tensile strength mild steel bars are used in cement concrete. These steel bars used in cement concrete give a lot of solid strength to the structure. What everyone needs for their homes and offices is a strong building structure, and the best option is steel paired with cement concrete. 

  •   Ductility

Ductility is the property of material by which it can withstand a great deal of manipulation without failure under high tensile stresses.

Mild steel is exceedingly ductile material, even during sheet metal fabrication. The percentage elongation of a standard tension test after fracture can be as high as 25 to 30%. This elongation gives visible evidence of expected failure in case of overloads, so that the construction crew will not be taken by surprise and has to deal with a sudden accident. Instead, the extra loads can be removed from the structure to keep it from collapsing. And in the worst extreme, should collapse occur, there is time for occupants to leave the buildings.

  •  Additions

Mild steel can easily be added to existing steel structures. Connections between new and existing structures can be used very efficiently. Thus new bays or even entire wings can be added to existing steel frame buildings, and steel bridges can be widened.

  •  Long Span Construction

 High-rise buildings, high transmission towers, and long span bridges are composed of this typeof steel. Plat girders or trusses can be used to create industrial buildings up to a span of 90 meters. Bridge spans up to 260 meters have been made with plate girders.

  •  Temporary Construction

 Steel structures are always preferred for temporary buildings. During war, arm constructions are made primarily out of steel. The structures are disassembled by opening a few bolts, the parts are carried to new places and the structure is easily reassembled.
