The Town of Newmarket completed construction of the by-pass between Hwy 400 and Hwy 404. This project aimed to assist in relieving traffic congestion and prevent delays along the Highway 9 and Green Lane corridor.

“Residents in East Gwillimbury have been looking forward to this opening since the project began two years ago,” said East Gwillimbury Mayor James Young. “I know that the design of the By-pass and its convenience will be appreciated by all.”

With more than 50,000 vehicles traveling on Yonge Street between Green Lane and Davis Drive, this By-pass will do wonders to relieve congested roads and improve the overall flow of traffic in the Region,” said Margaret Black, Mayor of King Township.

The project’s efforts to combat congestion in the area are being well received by the public as a success. The improvements have already improved residents and visitors commute through this area as they have already noticed vast improvement in traffic flow. Light signalization delays improvements have already been reduced by up to 52 per cent in some sections. While any delays at Yonge and Davis Drive have been reduced by up to 30 per cent since the left turn signalization improvement in April and have improved more so with the opening of the Newmarket By-pass.

When the $28.7 million dollar project design was approved by York Regional Council in January 1999 and property acquisition was approved in 2001 it included the following objectives:

  •  the widening of Highway 9 from two to four lanes between Highway 400 and Bathurst Street
  • the construction of four lanes on Bathurst Street between Highway 9 and Green Lane
  • the construction of four lanes on Green Lane between Bathurst Street and Yonge Street

The project also included planting of over 1220 trees and accommodations were made for wildlife passage.

“This is a state-of-the art project that will significantly improve the lives of York Regional residents for years to come and improve traffic flow through Newmarket,” said Newmarket Mayor Tom Taylor.
