When I decided to get into the business of real estate I spent a great deal of time asking myself what I had to offer to this industry. There are hundreds of real estate representatives in Barrie and the surrounding area, so what is going to set me apart from everyone else? What will I offer? How will I promote myself? These questions are not easy ones to answer really. I know a lot of people, I am blessed to have a lot of friends...but you still have to ask yourself "Why would people choose me?"
Let me go back in time a little bit to my previous career, which was also in sales. I could have moved up in the industry I was working for....there was lots of room for growth, but i HATED that job. I felt like I was pushing products on people, things they didn't need and I knew they couldn't afford. My position was based on a "sales target", meaning I had to sell a certain dollar value of product throughout the year. If I did not meet that sales target, my job was on the line. This became a highly stressful environment for me. I needed to work, but ethically I was torn. I felt like I was doing wrong by my clients in selling them products and setting them up with things that I KNEW they could not afford and would be unable to maintain.
I left that job to go on maternity leave and never went back. I remember when my maternity leave was getting close to the end, my boss called me in and asked if I would be able to start back early as they needed me. I said I would think about it, then went home and cried. I just could not bear the thought of returning to a job where I felt like I was doing my clients wrong, yet where I was getting recognized for a job well done.
I was very lucky that I was able to stay home and raise my children, and work part time at jobs that I chose because they fit into my schedule.
I vividly remember the day that I decided I wanted to pursue a career in Real Estate. We had just moved to Castlegar, British Columbia and purchased a house there ( this was our 7th move in 8 years, but only our second home purchase). After we had decided on the house, I looked at my husband and said "I could really see myself doing this, selling homes. I would be really good at this!". It was and exciting thought, but one that I chose to put on the back burner. I knew that a career in Real Estate required A LOT of hours and flexible scheduling, and with small children I just wasn't in a position to give what I knew was required of me.
Fast forward to 2005 when we made our move back to Barrie and settled in Barrie. I knew this would be our last move for quite some time as we wanted our 3 kids to be able to have some roots. Real Estate was still a thought in my mind, but the kids were still little, so the timing still was not right. Over time I had decided to open a little fitness studio and run my own business. I was feeling great. I was in a position where I was helping people, providing a service that was a benefit to them and helping my clients achieve goals. During my time running the studio, many other fitness centres began popping up all over Barrie and were offering prices I just could not compete with. My knees had started to fail me due to over use. It was time to stop. So............REAL ESTATE!! Finally, after years of thinking about it, and years of putting it on the back burner it was FINALLY time for me to take the leap and go for it!!!
So, here we are...I have my Real Estate license and I have chosen a fantastic brokerage in Century 21 B.J. Roth Realty Ltd.
This leads back to the taglines.......as I sat and thought about what my tag line would be I chose:
"Finding what fits....doing what's right"
