Sturgeon Falls Real Estate Listings and Information

Sturgeon Falls

The primary administrative and commercial centre of West Nipissing is the community of Sturgeon Falls, which is situated on the Sturgeon River, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of Lake Nipissing and 35 kilometres (22 mi) west of North Bay on Highway 17, part of the Trans-Canada Highway. The place got its start around 1874 as a trading post of the Hudson's Bay Company. Roughly half the population of West Nipissing lives in Sturgeon Falls. The remainder of the population lives in the villages of Cache Bay, Verner, Lavigne, Field, and River Valley.

Residents consider the history and culture of the communities that comprise the municipality of West Nipissing to be fundamental to its future development. Steeped in a rich tradition and culture, the communities of West Nipissing take pride in their heritage, which dates back to the days of the early fur traders. West Nipissing is a meeting place for many distinct cultures with strong Franco-Ontarian, Middle-Canadian and Aboriginal roots.

Our community benefits from our English, French and Anishinabek heritage and people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds living in rural and urban locations.

With three-quarters of the population stating French as their mother tongue and one quarter English, West Nipissing is the most bilingual community in Ontario.
