Hydrostone

The hydrostone is one of the most unique neighbourhoods in Halifax. Located in the North End of Halifax, the hydrostone offers an abundance of charming shops, eateries, and services.

The Hydrostone grew out of the ruins of the Halifax Explosion which devestated the North End of Halifax on December 6, 1917 when two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. An immediate need for housing for the thousands of people displaced from their homes was the first priority for the Halifax Relief Committee. The Hydrstone was one of the first planned communities in Canada. It was laid out by British Planner Thomas Adams and the buildings were designed by architect George Ross. The buildings are all variations of the same architectural theme and constructed with the unique “Hydro-Stone” concrete blocks.

Most of the dwellings are row-houses in groups of four and six, except for the large, two-storey single-family houses at the eastern end of each street.  Some have been converted to sets of flats.  All of the streets in the Hydrostone are boulevards (except Stanley Place).  These boulevards have treed, grassy strips which were designed to serve as communal outdoor space for the neighbourhood residents.

The Hydrostone offers a variety of attractive shops and appetizing eateries. Restaurants include Julien’s Bakery, with their authentic French baking; their breads & pastries are to die for and Epicurious Morsels offers a mouthwatering menu with inspired recipes from all over the world. Little Europe, a charming bistro with amazing food. Salvatore’s voted best pizza in Halifax with their famous thin crust pizza and Hamachi Kita, authentic sushi with Halifax’s best tempura! There are a variety of shops from the largest yarn shop in Halifax to Halifax's first EVOO & Balsamic tasting bar.

The Bell Tower Monument to the Halifax Explosion

Fort Needham Memorial Bell Tower is a historic tower and monument to those who lost their lives in the Halifax Explosion. It is situated in Fort Needham park which overlooks the north end of Halifax. Away from the business of downtown Halifax, this park is tucked away on top of a hill making it the perfect place to relax.

As I sit here at Starbucks enjoying my spinach/egg white/feta cheese wrap and medium roast venti coffee with whole milk and a sweetener, oh and a dash of vanilla, I'm hit with the fact that people watching is a contagious past-time. We have men in suits sitting down at a meeting, two middle age women just chatting and smiling, a red headed femnale studying or completing homeowrk, a blonde female talking ... Read More...
