2010 Olympic Torch Relay Route click here
On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, Vernon will welcome the torch relay as it travels through the Okanagan on its way to Vancouver and Whistler. Vernon is also very proud to be one of less than 200 communities across Canada chosen to host a Celebration Event that will include a 2 hour Vancouver2010 stage show, local entertainment and all kinds of great surprises.
So grab your red mittens, dress up warm, bring your family and friends and show Vernon's spirit!
Date: Tuesday, January 26
The Celebration Event will feature a stage show, videos, great music and 'activation'sites hosted by RBC and CocaCola. A highlight during the show will be the arrival of the Olympic flame and the lighting of the cauldron by our Community Torchbearer, Lannie Houle.
UNFORTUNATELY THERE WILL BE NO PARKING PERMITTED AT POLSON PARK FOR THIS EVENT.
For those who wish to cheer on the flame as it travels through Vernon, ....stay tuned to this website, we be posting the route information and map shortly.
You can also follow the route or watch it live at: http://www.ctvolympics.ca/torch/follow-torch/index.html
MORE INFO ON VERNON'S CELEBRATION EVENT:
The Torch Relay task group in Vernon was very pleased to have received grants from Canadian Heritage and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts which will offset the costs of hosting this wonderful community event. The Task Group decided to work with some local organizations to create lasting legacies - and even recreate a bit of the past.
Ice Palace: In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Vernon Winter Carnival, we have commissioned the building of a snow and ice palace similar to those that were part of the Carnival in the 1960s. We hope that this will revive the tradition and ice palaces will once again be part of Vernon Winter Carnival's magic! HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY VERNON WINTER CARNIVAL!
Performing Arts Video: To honour the many Performing Arts groups who provide outstanding entertainment throughout the year, we have also commissioned a 4 minute video. It will be premiered during the Vancouver2010 stage show and later available on websites so the world can see the talent that resides in Vernon.
Cultural Filmstrip: We are partnering with the Vernon Public Art Gallery and the Greater Vernon Museum and Archives to construct a "ultural filmstrip" which will be temporarily installed at Polson Park. Sections of the art piece will feature art from our schools, galleries and artists as well as photos of Vernon Winter Carnival, Polson Park and even some of Vernon's many sports heroes. Each panel will tell a story.
Ice Sculptures: Each year ice sculptures have been part of Vernon Winter Carnival, so we decided to invite some of Vernon's cultural groups to work with professional ice carvers and create an ice gallery at Polson Park. Come and see the ice chips fly as the groups begin carving on the morning of the 26th.
A BIG THANK YOU!
Events like this don't happen without a great deal of help from dedicated volunteers and organizations passionate about Vernon!
Thank you to all involved in helping making this moment in history a memorable one for us all.
