S.A.D or Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression brought on by the winter months. Experts believe it is due to a lack of sunlight that may cause havoc with your serotonin levels; a brain chemical that affects your mood. The drop in light exposure can lead to symptoms of anxiety, depression, weight gain, trouble concentrating and much more. S.A.D is usually treated with two types of light therapy, Bright light treatment and Dawn simulation. Bright light treatment uses a light while you work at your desk or even while eating your breakfast to simulate natural light throughout the day. While Dawn Simulation involves a light in your bedroom that starts dim and gradually gets brighter to simulate sunrise. With other more serious treatments such as antidepressants and counselling available, don't let S.A.D get the best of you this season.
