Bagged Leaf and Yard Waste Collection
As a Homeowner, you have undoubtedly discovered that the privilege of having a beautiful yard around your property comes with the unenviable job of raking and removing the fallen leaves and yard waste. This is a job that needs to be done around this time of year because very soon the snow and ice will make it more difficult, if not impossible to accomplish. So take advantage of the fact that we have had some mild weather, remember the following few points and you should have no trouble at all cleaning up your yard before winter. And as an added bonus, if you do it right, you should burn off enough calories to count it as a “trip to the gym”…that’s handy as we head into the holiday entertaining season!
Work Smart - Always rake with the wind and downhill if possible, take advantage of the gravity working in you favour. Limit your trips across the yard by raking them into little piles around the property and then pushing them onto a tarp or sheet and dragging it to the bin. You can even rake some of your leaves onto nearby flower beds to decompose throughout the Winter, the nutrients from the mulch will be good for them.
Proper Equipment – Choose a rake that suits your body type and the leaves you will be raking. If your rake is too heavy it will be hard to use and if there are too many leaves, an inadequate rake will lengthen the time it takes you to do the job. Wear gloves that protect your hands and give you traction on the handle of the rake. If you have asthma or allergies, you may even want to consider a mask to protect you from inhaling things that will irritate your breathing.
Leaf Collection – It’s a good idea to use leaves in the compost bin on your property, however if you have too many or you don’t have a composter, you will need to put them out at your curb to be collected. Halton Region continues to pick up bagged leaves and yard waste on the same day as your garbage pick-up. Please use only paper yard waste bags or open, reusable, rigid containers labelled yard waste. Remember, Yard waste in cardboard boxes, Blue Boxes, GreenCarts or plastic bags will not be collected. Visit the Halton Region Waste Management page to view your waste collection schedule.
