Fall into Some Seasonal Style

Fall is the perfect time to update your home style by adding some warm colours and textures to keep out the pending winter chills.

We simply can't deny any longer, fall has arrived and winter is on his tail so it's time to revamp the house to flow with the season. Just as we pack away the flip flops and the linen shorts, so must we re-detail our rooms to remove summer accesories and textures to be replaced warm, cozy and falltacular pieces.

Start with the front porch and fill planters with full bloomers such as mums or sculpted cedars. If you want to create more of an arrangement, try faux moss and a collection of birch branches. Surround both planters with varied sizes of gourds and pumpkins.

Step in the front door and breathe in fall with scents of cinnamon, frankincense, sandalwood, patchouli, cranberry orange and pine. Lay a heavy scatter rug on the floor to protect from rain and snow and to add a visual sense of warmth and comfort the moment you enter. Your home should immediately warm and welcome you inside.

In the kitchen, display groupings of gourds and beautiful fall leaves, twigs and berries under bell jars. Keep wooden bowls filled with washed apples on the countertop. In the dining room, fill a bar cart with all items needed to make special coffees or hot chocolate, designed to warm the soul -- and to look chic too,

Drape chairs in the livingroom with beautiful knit throws and designer pillows constructed from heavy velvets and wool textiles. One of the most exciting trends for high end homes is one-of-a-kind, hand painted drapery. If you don`t want to splurge on the designer fabrics, why not try to create your own using ready-made panels and fabric paints. Paint geometric patterns or free hand text on the panels.

There`s a lot less natural light at this time of year, so up the wattage in chandeliers and table lamp bulbs and bring in a plethora of candles. Don`t be shy and burn often. Candles are also a fabulous way to keep the scents of the home strong. Buy scented candles (use naturally scented ones to avoid the dangerous chemicals found in synthetic scents) or simply add your own essential oils around the wick of pillar candles.

In the bedroom and bathrooms, scatter area rugs where your naked toes hit the floor. One of our favourites is sheepskin. Change the sheets to flannel and add an extra yummy blend for chilly evenings. Bring home heated towel bars for the ensuite. An electrician can hardwire them or you can purchase the plug in ones. Using a small end table, create a bath bar next to the tub. Fill in with rich creams, luxurious bath salts and oils, and of course, a candle or two.

Fabulous homes are always in tune with the season, evolving as the world around us does. This weekend take the time to fall autum-style. Now that`s fabulous living!
