According to a recent article in MoneySense Magazine, if you live in Oakville or Burlington, you are living in one of the Top 10 “Best Places to Live in Canada”.
The magazine does an annual research study and releases a list that ranks all Canadian communities with a population of 10,000 or more residents. While high profile cities like Toronto and Montreal boast world-class cultural events and tourist attractions that appeal to the visitor in all of us, the MoneySense list is designed to highlight the best communities in which to settle down and make a life. The breakdown of the top cities is done in three sections (small town, mid-size and large cities) since not everyone craves the fast-paced life in a large city and some people can't imagine settling down in a small town.
When deciding which communities will make the list, the magazine considers many factors that contribute to the quality of life in a city or town. Criteria for making the list include; access to medical care, employment, housing prices, green space, low crime rate, weather and household income, services for new immigrants and families raising children, good public transit, affordable housing and retirement options.
So how do we fit in to this list? Burlington and Oakville were the only GTA cities in the top 10, ranking 5th and 7th out of more than 200 cities across the country. Ranking 1st and 2nd respectively, Burlington and Oakville were named the two top mid-sized Canadian cities. Milton made the short list also, coming in at number 15 as a mid-sized city and 44th overall. Also representing the Halton Region well, Halton Hills ranked as the 29th best place to live in Canada, beating out even Toronto, proving that bigger isn't always better.
So what have the people at MoneySense realized about our local communities? What is it about this region that
might cause you to consider a move here? Cities like Oakville and Burlington, offer the convenience of being in close proximity to a major city like Toronto, but they still manage to offer an excellent quality of life. For example, did you know that Burlington is known for having one of the lowest tax rates in the country? Did you also know that Oakville has one of the sunniest and warmest climates in all of Canada?
Both cities have expansive green spaces, wonderfully preserved historical sites, vibrant arts and culture events, thriving business sectors, a manageable 30-40 minute commute to downtown Toronto, local festivals occurring all year long, lakeside amenities for both boaters and beach-goers and some of the most amazing restaurants and eateries you will find anywhere in Canada.
