Spruce up your home for entertaining this season
Christmas is just around the corner and that means your holiday entertaining is probably getting underway quicker than you imagined! You’ve begun to pull out the decorations for the tree and all the lights and garlands that turn your home into a holiday haven.
Unfortunately you also may have come to the realization that you never got around to some of the home renovations you began planning this time last year. All the big plans to repaint, replace some of the tired furniture and update the overall look of your home never came to fruition.
Now, the thought of welcoming visitors this holiday season makes you cringe, but there’s no time to remodel or move. What can you do to quickly and easily freshen up your home in time for your company?
Here are a couple of quick things you can do to give your home a mini makeover, even some that you can do this weekend if you feel the urge:
Shake things up: Sometimes, all you really need to give your house a new look is to start by changing the layout of the main living areas. Clear out the small items and clutter of your living space and try rearranging the larger pieces of furniture to see if you can update the décor without spending a dime! If you are planning a lot of parties and get-togethers, make sure that you arrange seating that is conducive to conversation and will accommodate large groups of people.
Paint an Accent Wall: If you have been contemplating the idea of re-doing the walls in your whole house, but haven’t had the time, maybe try something on a smaller scale. You don’t have to re-paint the whole house, or even the whole living room. Why not just get a can of paint in a bold colour and create an accent wall? Pick a colour that will compliment your current palette but still bring a fresh perspective to your space.
Signature Touch: Create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that let’s your guests feel right at home and reflects your personal style. Christmas decorations will bring the festive feel to your home and potpourri or scented candles will make any space feel cozy and comfortable, maybe updating the walls with some new family photos or art work will be just what you need.
Fix up your furniture: There are a couple of different options for your furniture that don’t involve financing and large expenditures. Wood pieces can be easily painted or sanded and re-stained. Sofas and loveseats can be slip-covered, upholstered chairs and ottomans can even be painted using a fabric medium. Try new lampshades and new throw pillows to give the room a little kick at a minimal cost.
The bottom line is that you don’t have to move or renovate your entire home in order to feel comfortable entertaining your friends and family this season. Just get your creative juices flowing and think outside the box. There are lots of inexpensive ways to breathe new life into your décor.
