How to maintain your granite countertop

Granite is perfect for countertops because of its durability, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore it completely. Your granite countertop needs to be maintained and sealed annually to protect the surface and prevent damage

How to do it:

  1. Most granite counters need to be resealed every one or two years. Be sure to choose a nontoxic sealer since counters are used for food preparation. There are two types of sealers: penetrating sealers and topical sealers. Professionals recommend using a penetrating sealer, but check with your manufacturer or fabricator to be sure you are using the best sealer for your granite countertop. It’s a good idea to use a sealer that says “oil repellent impregnator” on the packaging. This type of sealer prevents oil from seeping into the stone.
Tip: When using a new type of brand or sealer, consider applying a small amount to an inconspicuous area to make sure the product won’t ruin your finish.

  2. A penetrating sealer protects the structure of the natural stone as it is absorbed into the granite. Begin by rubbing the sealer onto your countertops using your rag or sponge. When it’s almost dry, rub the counter with your dry rag or a clean sponge. Wait two hours and then apply a second coat.

  3. To make sure your counter is adequately sealed, spill a little water on it. After 30 minutes, wipe up the spot. If the water leaves your counter darkened, the granite is not sufficiently sealed.

  4. Even though granite is durable and you can use harsher chemicals to clean it, doing so may dull the counter’s finish. Be careful when choosing a cleaner and consider using mild solutions such as dishwashing detergent. Simply moisten a sponge or soft rag with dishwashing detergent and then wipe your countertop with the rag. Be sure to thoroughly rinse and dry your countertop after it has been cleaned.
