On Sunday July 1st Canada will celebrate its 145th birthday. In that time our country has grown and changed immensely. It began as 4 provinces and is now 10 plus 3 territories and stretches from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The population has grown ten fold from 3.5 million to 35 million today.
Gross domestic product per capita has rocketed from $3100 (measured in current terms in 1870) to $56,000. The value of Canadian exports is at $44.8 billion almost a 1000 times higher than its 1866 level of $50.3 million. Some of that dramatic increase has been driven by gains in two Canadian exports. The cost of a barrel of oil has risen to about $80 from $2.41 back in the day.....and an ounce of gold gets you about $1600 today up from $18.93.
HAPPY CANADA DAY EVERYONE!
