When planning that perfect kitchen renovation you immediately start thinking of the cost, but you still want a change! Fortunately there are many ways to update the look without breaking the bank.

Cabinetry: Doing a full cabinet replacement can be costly; however, there are a few simple updates that won't break the bank. Update the cabinets by painting them. Consider a lighter shade if going with dark walls or conversely, lighter walls with darker cabinets. Try changing only the doors or consider doors with glass fronts. Consider removing the doors entirely and create open shelving. (This is currently a hot trend in kitchen design.) And last but not least try new hardware which is also a great option if the cabinets are being painted.

Lighting: Updating the lighting can change the feel of a kitchen. Get rid of fluorescent lights and add pendent lighting over work areas, pot lights as accents and dimmers to tone down everything for mealtime. A stylish light in the centre of the space, such as a chandelier can bring it all together.

Wall Colour: Chose a colour that suits the tone you want to set in the kitchen. For smaller spaces avoid colours that are too dark or heavy as they make the rooms appear smaller. For larger kitchens or ones that part of an open concept choose colours that flow to the open space.

Backspash: There are many backsplash options available that are affordable and look great.

When remodelling a kitchen on a budget the devil is in the details. Care should be taken in choosing the design features, colours and updates so it can create a cohesive look that brings life to the kitchen.
