Exterior Spring Cleaning

This weekend in Ottawa has got to be the best one we've had yet, this spring!  If you are feeling liberated and can't wait to get outside to get the exterior of your home in tip top shape after the miserable winter, here are a few things you can do to make your home look amazing:

Repair and re-seal the driveway

Shoveling, plowing, salt and sand take their toll on asphalt in the winter.  The best way to wipe the winter blahs from it are to reseal it!  Give it a GOOD WASH, Repair any cracks, fill in any holes with an asphalt patching compound, edge the driveway so that it's clearly defined and apply the sealer.

Repair and reseal walkway cracks

Just like your driveway, the concrete walkways can crack or get damaged from all the nasty winter hazards.  If you fill the cracks and apply a sealing material, your walkways will look great for years to come.

Wash the siding of your house and the windows

Dirt and grime have a nasty habit of building up on the exterior of a house over the course of a winter.  There's no better time to start washing it all away to reveal a sparkling, bright exterior.  If you don't have a power washer, they're usually available to rent at most home improvement stores.

Check the roof

It's always a good idea to check the roof on your house every spring.  Ice can build up with the thaw and freeze cycles of winter, causing damage to the shingles and gutters.  Clean the gutters if you see any debris and assess the state of the roof.  Depending on your comfort level, you might want to repair any damage or call a professional roofing company to help you with that.

Tidy the gardens

If you have any landscaping on your property, how is it looking?  Are there leaves stuck among the bases of the bushes? Perhaps you didn't get to cutting away all the growth from last year's garden and now it's looking like a mess of dead plants.  Put on your gardening cloves and get to it!  Cut away those dead stalks, fish out the leaves, pull any weeds that may be already showing their ugly heads, dig out/cut back plants that have been spreading a bit too far and tidy it up.  This is a great time of year to add some mulch to the garden as well.  Mulch will help keep the moisture in when the weather gets hot!

Reseed the lawn

This has been a particularly cold winter and your lawn may be in need of some repair too.  Rake the lawn to remove all the dead grass from the fall, reseed and give it a nice drink.  If you pay attention to the weather, plan to reseed just before a couple of days of rain.  Rain is free!

 Check the deck

Nothing seems to be left untouched by winter!  Decking is no exception, except for those who used the amazing new composite decking materials.  Have a good look at the boards of the deck, the joints and the steps. repair or replace the components that are damaged, give it a wash with a power washer and reseal it.

Wow, that was a lot of work.  Time to show it off and invite your family or friends over for a much deserved BBQ!

Enjoy the weather everyone!
