Finally the summer is over and the kids are headed back to class. Despite the cooler temperatures this summer, I hope everyone has had an amazing time!
I am reminded of one of the most common questions that newcomers to Ottawa ask me: "Where are the best schools?" It doesn't matter if you're moving to Ottawa or within it, I can help! The first step is to go to The Fraser Institude website. They rank Elementary and Secondary Schools all across Canada. However, I know of a few schools that are not included on their ranking system.
It's very difficult to determine the quality of a school based on it's test scores alone. They're usually a great place to start, but I recommend that parents look a little deeper by visiting the school board websites, the government of Ontario website and the websites for each school. Don't be shy to call the principal to make an appointment or chat with other parents who's children go to the school. Here are some handy questions to ask yourself as you research:
What are the demographics of the school's population?
What percentage of children are ESL (English as a second language)?
What percentage of children are special needs?
What clubs/activities to they offer to the kids?
Is there an active Parent Council and what have they been doing for the school?
After all that research, you should have a very good idea of what the schools are about and how they would fit your children.
Here are some great links to help guide you in your search for the best school.
Finally, when you have your top 5 schools pin pointed, send me an email to get your property search started. I'll help you discover they types of properties and their price points in your favourite areas.
