The Emerald Ash Borer - What you need to know

Barrie's forests are constantly being monitored for pests and threats to our urban forests.  Since 2002 two threats have been a particular challenge:   The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and Asian Long horned beetle.

The Emerald Ash Borer attacks all types of Ash trees, particularly the Fraxinus.  The EAB was discovered in Detroit and has since affected Southern Ontario and continues to move north.

Our forests inhabit 10% of Ash trees, as well as residential areas and parks throughout the city.

            The Emerald Ash Borer

Do you have an Ash tree on your property?  If so you should check for the following signs of disease.

  • premature yellowing of leaves
  • dead branches
  • thinning crown
  • branches sprouting from the base of the tree
  • bark cracks

Look for signs of insect infestation.  Markings will look like a zig zag or D shaped holes where insects have gone in and out of the tree.

Barrie neighbourhoods with confirmed infestations include:  Chieftain Crescent, Corbett Drive, Ferndale Dr North, Hickling Trail,  Maitland Drive, Maitland Park,  Marshall Street, St. Vincent Park, and Taylor Drive.

At present the city has been removed 5,000 ash trees and replacing them with new ones.  This project cost is estimated over a 15 year period at $2.8 million.

You may have noticed these purple or green hanging traps.  These EAB traps are visible indicators of the presence of the insect and can help the city plan for action.

What can we as home owners to do help?

1.  Carefully inspect your trees

2.  Continue to monitor them yearly.

3. If you notice any of the above signs of disease you should call the City of Barrie Parks and Fleet Dept. 705-739-4255 right away.

4. Spread awareness.  Inform friends and neighbours to do the same.
