The Northwestern Health Unit can provide information to homeowners for testing for Radon Gas and how to find a certified Radon Mitigation Contractor. Radon Gas is a naturally occuring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium that is found in rocks and soil. It is difficult to detect without the aid of a test kit due to its invisible nature. Test kits are available to purchase at local household product stores or online. Radon Gas can enter a home through cracks in the foundation, floors, walls, open floor drains etc. Long term exposure is the second leading cause of Lung Cancer in Canada. It is recommend to test the lowest lived-in area of your home for a minimum of three months during winter. If your home tests above Canada's guidelines of 200Bq/cubic metre, it is recommended that actions be taken to reduce the radon gas in the home.
