REGINA NEIGHBOURHOODS ARE CHANGING

Neighbourhood designs are always changing and the current trend is going back to homes with verandas in front and garages in the back. The grid pattern of these old neighbourhoods is said to promote a through flow of traffic which is hoped to encourage a return to walking and cycling as modes of transportation. The idea of this type of design is said to promote both safety and community building.

Regina’s community developers are creating neighbourhoods with a mix of commercial and residential land use, higher density housing forms, and more diverse housing options. These new sustainable designs will define what our future city will look like.

Although we may be returning to the neighbourhood designs from the past, there are many differences between a wonderful old home in one of our established neighbourhoods and the new homes being built today. Home building designs, materials, techniques, and systems have advanced significantly in the past decades, especially in the area of energy efficiency.

Some of the most established neighbourhoods, such as Old Lakeview and the Cathedral Area, were actually once new neighbourhoods located on the outskirts of the city. New communities that are now developing on the edge of the city will soon become familiar and established as well, as our city stretches its boundaries to welcome the new citizens who have come to Regina to seek a better way of life.
