We have had an unusually warm, dry spring resulting in a lower than usual snowpack. Accordingly water conservation is already a hot topic in the Okanagan. One interesting fact that recently appeared in an article in The Morning Star is that the Okanagan valley has less water available per person than anywhere in Canada – yet we have some of the highest water use in the country, with 24% of all water that is being used in the Okanagan being used on lawns and gardens. We need to move away from the concept of a green lawn or plants that require a great deal of water and move to xeriscaping, which is the practice of landscaping using plants that require minimal water.
