City of Barrie
Only an hour’s drive north of Toronto, the city of Barrie is a fast growing hub of culture, education, and vibrancy. With a population of 143,000 in 2014, representing a 5.6% increase from 2006, Barrie is expanding and developing with lots of opportunities for housing and jobs, which is perfect for young families, professionals, and the many graduates of Georgian College’s innovative campus.

Barrie’s crown jewel is the beautiful waterfront, host to summer and winter festivals as well as parks, a marina, restaurants, and shopping. In the summer residents celebrate Kempenfest and Promenade Days, while in the winter the city hosts Winterfest and a giant New Year’s bash. The downtown core is just a 5 minute walk away where residents can stroll the streets and find numerous restaurants, shopping, live music, and event venues all within several blocks.
For those who love to participate in the arts, the MacLaren Art Centre has both permanent and revolving exhibitions to keep it’s patrons intrigued, and Barrie has several theatre organization such as Talk is Free Theatre and Theatre by the Bay for those who prefer the performing arts.
Sports are very popular in Barrie, both participant and spectator, and Barrie is the proud home of the much-loved OHL team the Barrie Colts who play at the Barrie Molson Centre. There are ball hockey leagues, curling clubs, roller derby teams, and all of the skiing, golfing, boating, and hiking one could want!
With so many new developments in Barrie, the job market is expanding and diverse. The biggest employers are Georgian College and Royal Victoria Hospital, but Sinton Transportation, Scotiabank, and Napoleon Appliance lead as a few of the biggest employers in the private sector. New subdivisions are bringing jobs in the education, professional, trades, and retail industries, and the resorts and golf courses surrounding the city bring in tourism, making for a city full of opportunities and advancement.
