City of Grande Prairie Annexation Open House

The City of Grande Prairie has planned open houses regarding the City’s current annexation application. The open houses are scheduled for May 27 and 28 from 430pm-8pm at the Muskoseepi Park Pavilion. Residents will have an opportunity to meet with city councillors and administration to discuss the application and effects that it will have on landowners. The area in question is approximately 6300 hectares in the West, Northwest, Northeast and several quarter sections surrounding the City. This was agreed upon by the City and County of Grande Prairie in June of 2012 through the adoption of the Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP). If you would like to learn more about the IDP please click the link at the bottom of this blog. The link below will take you to the City's website. From there you can click on various maps to view the short-term and long-term annexation areas as well as the proposed 50-year annexation boundary.

A little background history on the current annexation application…

Between August and December of 2012, the City and the County of Grande Prairie had met to negotiate the terms of the annexation. Unfortunately, an agreement could not be made on all issues. Both parties decided to attempt mediation, which is required by the Municipal Government Act. The mediated discussions were held in February and March of this year and as a result the City decided to go ahead and start the process to file its application to the Municipal Government Board. This request will include landowner transition provisions and compensation to the County.

As part of the application process, affected landowners were mailed a letter that provided details on the taxation phase-in formulas, zoning and development opportunities, service levels, and various lifestyle issues. The open houses are another phase of the application process. The City is hopeful to have the application filed no later than June 30, 2013. Once it is filed, a copy of the full application will be made available on the City of Grande Prairie’s website and a hard copy will be available to view in person at City Hall and at the City Service Center. Once the Municipal Government Board accepts the application, it will have its own public consultation process and will schedule a public hearing within the City of Grande Prairie.
