Happy Campers

After a long winter, May long weekend never seems to come quickly enough. In so many of our minds May long weekend is the official start of summer and camping season. We pack our tents, hitch up our trailers, or simply prepare a picnic and head out to the nearest campground or park. So now that it is “officially” camping season here are some places near to Grande Prairie to check out.

A personal recommendation is Dunvegan Campground about 45 minutes north of Grande Prairie. Their sites are surrounded with trees which give you privacy and shelter, they are also equipped with fire pits and picnic tables. They have campsites for both tents and larger RV’s. Along with the basic amenities they also have several added bonuses including trails around the campground which are great for biking or walking. The campground is also a historic site so there is several old buildings a person can take a tour of and the pavilion often features videos which give an extra touch. There is a park for children to play on and the mini golf course/ice cream shop is only a ten minute walk up the gravel road. If you have a free weekend this summer I would recommend heading out there even if it is only for a day!

If a 45 minute drive seems a little extreme and you would prefer to stay closer to home a great option is Happy Trails Campground. They are located roughly ten minutes northwest of town and have very nice facilities. The campground has a shower house, wireless internet, laundry, and even a general store. If you don’t have an RV it is no problem as they have cabins available for rent. It is a great location if you want a quick get away without the hassle and the long drive.

Yet another great option is Saskatoon Provincial Park located about 20 minutes west of Grande Prairie. This park has many different sources of entertainment which makes it great for all ages. There are walking trails, a baseball diamond, canoeing/kayaking, playgrounds, and shelters. It is great for day trips or you can spend the weekend camping there as they do have shower facilities, power, and fire pits.

About 5 minutes south of Grande Prairie you will find Camp Tamarack RV Park which is another great option. The short distance outside of town gives a person easy access to anything they need while they get the wilderness feeling. The campground has laundry, showers, a games room, and is located close to a golf course.

Wherever the road may lead you this summer I hope you get the chance to enjoy the great outdoors and nice weather while we have it.
